WHO WE ARE
In collaboration with LEV,UPPID was founded in 1997 by a group of parents in Entebbe and registered as a non governmental organization on 3rd October 1998 to represent children with intellectual disabilities and advocate for their rights. The organization rebranded its name from Uganda parents of Children with Intellectual Disabilities (UPACLED) to Uganda Parents of persons of with Intellectual Disabilities (UPPID) 22nd April, 2013.
UPPID is a pressure group whose aim is to work towards giving a voice and ultimately uplift the welfare of PWIDS persons with intellectual disabilities by giving them a chance to enjoy their human rights enshrined in the U.N Declaration on children’s Rights and in the constitution of the Republic of Uganda. The organization advocates for full inclusion of PWID as equal citizens and participants in all aspects of life.
Parents pay a very important role in creating a positive attitude towards PWIDS trough sharing experiences and information on intellectual disabilities and how people with such disability can be resourceful. PWIDS have the right to fully participate in their community and be treated with dignity and respect.
